How Blackjack Psychology Comes into Play
The fact that people can, through strategy, heavily influence the outcome of Blackjack is wonderful, but at the same time, it opens the door for other human emotions to come and be a factor. Few people seem to recognize this, but psychology can make or break your game.
All the best Blackjack strategies in the world won't help you if you get frustrated easily. This is a reality that you can see for yourself. If you have ever watched the pros play on TV, you would see that when they get frustrated, they make elementary mistakes, so you must try and avoid that.
Blackjack psychology is mostly about learning how to cope with frustration and anger, and one of the most common causes is when you play a newbie. If you are sitting with a bunch of new players and they make a decision that costs you the game, it can be very irritating. But you must remember that not everyone follows the basic strategy guides. If they decide to stand on a 12 and it costs you, accept it's part of the game.
On the mental aspects, it's essential that you play with the right outlook. You need to remove any doubt or fear of going over 21. Playing scared will not help your Blackjack strategy to work. In some cases, it will reach a point that you'll be afraid of hitting even when you should. Don't let that happen.
Of course, the opposite of playing in fear is playing with reckless abandon. Remember, there is a basic and effective Blackjack strategy for hitting, standing, splitting etc. All too often players who go on winning streaks deviate from the formula and end up losing. Stick with what is proven.
Tilting isn't limited to Poker; it also applies to Blackjack. When you find yourself getting bad cards and see that fish get naturals seemingly every other hand, just keep in mind that all hands dealt have no connection with the previous ones. It is just a swing, and it will eventually change.
The last point is very important. Some Blackjack players harbor the illusion that after losing, they should double up because they are "due" for a win. That is nonsense; just because you lost three hands in a row doesn't mean you'll win the next three. Cards have no memory.
Blackjack is also a mental game, and in the end it comes down to how well you control yourself. Learn to play under pressure, and more often than not, you'll beat the other players and the dealer.
